When the Thorntons approached Domani for help in designing their perfect ensuite, the well-respected bathroom firm were essentially given carte blanche.
Mr and Mrs Thornton were in the process of completely rebuilding their master bedroom and ensuite bathroom, so initially, we didn’t even know what the room dimensions would be,’ explains John Milburn who acts as chief designer at Domani. ‘Once they had decided on a set of fitted bedroom furniture, we knew where the dividing wall would be and worked from there. The two key points in the Thorntons’ hopes for their new bathroom were for a space which was as open plan and uncluttered as possible, and which felt really luxurious, both in its layout and its design.’ The end result combines two varieties of highly polished marble with mosaic accents, the latest ‘it’ wood: wenge, and unique squared-off fixtures and fittings from top quality bathroom brand Duravit and renowned designer Philippe Starck, for a striking, stylish and thoroughly contemporary look.
‘The Thorntons were keen to keep to very clean lines, but obviously every bathroom needs storage space and we were keen to allow for as much as possible without disrupting the aesthetic of the room.’ John informs me, before advising me of the innovative ways in which this need was met. ‘The mirrors above the twin basins are flush with the wall, but are actually recessed bathroom cabinets to store toiletries. You’d never know to look at them, but that’s how we wanted it – we literally built the wall around the idea.’ There also are three spotlit recesses around the shower area which continue the mosaic accents from throughout the rest of the room and provide attractive focal points as well as a handy place to keep your shampoo!
‘The luxurious quality of the materials, standard of the installation and the clear consideration of the design is Domani’s work at its best’.
The third area of storage, a tall cupboard alongside the basin area, is as much a design feature as any other part of the room, continuing the dark wood and chrome finishes and mirroring the recurring squared-off motif. Everything from the toilet to the taps to the tiles is of an angular bent but through the clever use of colour, never feels sterile, in fact, this is an ensuite to rival any in the world’s finest hotels. The luxurious quality of the materials, standard of the installation and the clear consideration of the design a fine example of Domani’s work and perfectly fits the requirements and the wishes of its owners; who John happily reports are ‘absolutely thrilled’ with the end result.
